12. Citizen Kane
The action takes place around the death of the famous media magnate Charles Kane. The entire movie is made up of flashbacks: episodes from the protagonist’s past that provide answers to many questions. For example, why did a reporter who wanted to tell people the truth turn into a self-centered, money-hungry person?
The film received positive reviews from critics but failed at the box office. William Hearst (Kane’s prototype) strictly forbade mention of the movie in any of his diaries. By the 1940s, newspapers were almost the only source of communication. Nevertheless, the film still received eight Oscar nominations and a statuette for best original screenplay.
